Making a Historic Space Feel Brand New
DRPILLA provided extensive shoring design and building design to reuse portions of building. Our design focused on preserving as much of the open space as possible. A new steel structure, excavation of the cellar and a new rooftop addition define the space. The rooftop addition was significant in that it was the first approved for a carriage house by landmarks in this historic district. The project benefited the existing surroundings by reducing disturbance at grade during construction, used less structural material than building new – even when bolstering of the structural system was required, and fundamentally addressed conservation by working with and improving upon existing conditions by extending the life of the building.
